A while back in one of Mel's posts we had a conversation about pocket rot wood. Some people were asking how it was formed and I thought the samples below might clarify things. When wood rots, parts of it rots before other parts, leaving kind of a honeycomb effect. When the partially rotted wood was covered in volcanic ash, the empty cells were filled with agate or jasper. In the examples below, the cells were not filled in. Instead they have a druzy quartz in them. Cut with the grain Cut across the grain These specimens need an acid bath to clean the druzy. Curt

That is a really special piece. Are you going to display it somehow? It is like nothing I have ever seen before. Thanks so much for posting this.

I like the look too. It remindes me of Hells Canyon, but with bigger rot pockets.
I've seen a lot of nice cabs cut form Hells Canyon. Do you think the larger pockets could be cabed or used (possibly flat-faced) in jewelry? Or would there be problems?

Thanks guys! Deb I ground some to more or less cab shape and put them in the vibe, then lost interest. I suppose some interesting jewelry could be made with it but at this point I'd rather have them as specimens. Curt

Rats, I thought maybe you were going to throw them out because of the holes in them. Nice as either specimens or cabs.

Nice specimens. Like the way the druzy filled it in. There is sponge rock here in Mo. that looks similar. Have to dig some out and compare it. Ken
