Two weeks back, I went to the Knappin at Glass Buttes. It was cold. Anyhow, even thought I had to leave before it was over, I had a great time, and collected some great obsidian. Here are a few photographs. Woody Aurora Borealis pit (rainbow) Aurora Borealis boulders Gold Sheen knapped Our fire....that piece on top is four feet long Morning snow My fluting jig, and point fluted Some of Eric Juholas eccentrics More Aurora Borealis at home Another shot Midnight Lace with silver

Toad: The Glass Buttes Knappin in held during spring break so the whole family can attend, plus the ground has usually thawed out, and is damp, and diggable. The summer temperature goes well into the hundreds, and the ground the obsidian is in hardens up like concrete. Plus the Oregon buzz worms are out. As it was, I had to dig out the large Aurora Borealis boulders with a four pound smash hammer and chisel. Over an hour digging for each of the big ones. The biggest is over two hundred pounds, so, I guess the time was worth the effort. Woody

Nice pix. Thanks for taking us along. If you get to the knappin in Mo. this year, give me a shout. I don't knap, but would like to meet up with you. Love the eccentrics that he did. Ken

Very cool, Woody. That aurora borealis obsidian is beautiful and that gold sheen looks great. Those eccentrics are really interesting. I traded a wrap for a flint knapped knife in AZ when I was there this year. Rockhobbit had a flint knapper set up during Gold Rush Days there. His kids knapped too although weren't as focused on it as their father. It is fascinating to watch but I like my knuckles too much to try it ;-) Looks like big red got a workout hauling all the great rocks.
