Hi all! I'm wanting to go for a drive up into the Smokies now that spring is in the air. I'm thinking of heading up to Asheville, or the surrounding area, or maybe towards Boone. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good, open place I can go hunt for rocks? I have no clue what I'm doing, but have plenty of tools and an empty trunk! Hoping my foot heals up so I can got one day this week, sneak out of work.
Any advice is MOST welcome!

Most all places in the Smokies are closed to digging except the fee dig places. The Rangers have shut down most all of the good places. You can go to the Crabtree Emerald mine, have to get prior authorization and pay a fee, but it is hard to find anything on your own without help. You can go to Diamond Hill in Antreville, SC, also fee and prior authorization. I know you had a bad experience with MAGMA, but they have digs coming up all the time and that would be you best bet. Go to www.dirtyrockhounds.proboards.com for the latest info on digs. Get with rons(Ron Sever) on here or oldgrouchy(Doug). They can help you. Both are extremely helpful. PM them. Doug lives near Charlotte and Ron is in Agusta, Ga. close to Graves Mtn. Ken

I ditto everything Ken said. Try to make it to the crabtree. I mean how many times in your life do you get a chance to dig at a real deal, unsalted emerald mine
