I received my new covington saw this weekend it really cool!! The directions were not worth a darn but despite that got it going. Now the questions ;D 1. Will the stones absorb the mineral oil so they will not polish correctly? if so what can I do to correct the problem?
2. cleaning the oil, was wondering if I could strain it through a filter I use for my turkey fryer or just add new?
want to do this correctly thanks for any input

You could probably soak your slabs over night in acetone, and then rinse them in hot soap and water. I live in a dusty rural area, so I set my slabs on edge in an old 45 RPM record rack out in the hot sun. The heat brings the oil to the surface, and the dust absorbs it. I just rinse the dust off and the slabs are ready to go. You could also submerge your slabs in a bucket of kitty litter or oil dry for a couple of days. Just keep a lid on the bucket so stray cats don't decide to use the bucket.

Easiest way for me is to use an pan with water in it and then I add Dawn dish soap and 20 mule team borax(mainly because when I throw out the water when it gets dirty, I can pour it on weeds and it will kill them). I also have kitty litter to put them in for a day, after washing. To clean the oil, the turkey fat strainer wont do it. Use 2 brown paper bags together and put in a 5 gal. bucket with holes in the bottom and sat in another 5 gal. bucket to hold the strained oil. Have to put rods on top of the bottom bucket for the top bucket to sit on. Some put rods thru the bottom bucket to keep the mess down. Ken

I didn't do a very good job with the strainer, we deep fry turkeys in peanut oil and then strain the oil thru a paper filter (like a monster coffee filter) and then reuse it a time or two. sorry about that. have lots of borax and dish soap so will follow your advice also have acetone thanks guys

I go to the Dollar Store and buy dish soap any color will do. Some smells nicer than others. I kinda like the bubble gum smell. Put a gallon of water and the whole bottle of soap. I just toss cut off slab in the bucket. If I want to look at my slab I dip in the bucket, Rub it with a finger, rinse it in the soap again then water. OIL is gone. This will do about 50 slabs or until ya get tired of looking at it. I have lots of weed I will give that idea a try.

I put them in kitty litter for about an hour or so then drop them into the dish soap/water bucket overnight or wash them by hand if I'm in a hurry.

A bucket of sawdust works pretty good to soak up the oil before the detergent soak.......leave the slabs over night if you can stand the suspense. I use a bucket lid with holes in it between the top bucket with the bag of rocksnot, and the bucket with the clean oil below. The bucket lids are made so the buckets can be stacked, this makes a pretty stable setup. Woody
