In my last thread I asked for the difference between the rotary and vibe tumblers. What I discovered from your replies was that the major difference between the two was time. Yes you can do the entire project with a rotary but by adding the vibe after the shaping phase greatly reduces the amount to time to completion. However you can not do the entire job with just a vibe. With all that having being said and my being an admitted instant gratification junkie, I want to opt for the ultimate rotary and vibe tumbler combination. To all of you out there.... What would your dream team be? I think, from what I have read, I am liking the Lortone rotary (because of the lids). I also like the idea of dual drums in either 3lb or 6lb size. I have read that the dual 6lb drums can be replaced with a single 12lb to accommodate larger pieces. What vibe would you team up with the Lortone rotary? Thanks in advance for your needed feedback

Ah,heres one I've thought about a lot. In my experience and opinion,if I could only have 1 rotary and 1 vibe, I would have to go with the qt12 Lortone and the Lot-o vibe. I've got rotaries ranging from 1.5,3lbers,couple 45c's to 3-12lb'ers.To me there is no comparison on the grinding time, the 12 is so much quicker, and can handle larger rocks.I dont have 6 lb barrels,so cant comment on them.I just do coarse in the 12's,let em run an extra week after the last coarse change, then 1000 in Lot-o 3days and 3 days polish. This is what works for me.That would be my dream team.

Well, Stu, sorry to delay your gratification, but the answer depends on how much rock you want to do.
I have a 50lb home built rotary that I use to feed my Thumlers UV-18, which is a great combination for me. The 50lb rotary does a much faster job of grinding than my 12lb rotary. You definitely need a larger rotary than your vibe in order to have enough rock to feed it.
You might need a couple of 12lb-15lb rotaries to keep up with a Thumlers UV-10 or similar sized vibe (Randy might be able to comment on what he uses).
For smaller quantities, a 12lb or 15lb and Lot-O would work well.

Being the proud owner of some of snuffy's polished pet wood, I will vouch for the shine he gets using that set up! I've tumbled a little flint in a vibe and am working on rebuilding a rotary. Once I've got them both going, we'll see what I like best. I'm def. not into delayed gratification...trying to see if this hobby might teach me some patience...hmmmm....

I had some initial problems with my big MJR 35# rotary tumbler ( came with a bad bearing) but the manufacturer sent me replacements for the bad part and it's run 24/7 for a couple of years now without a hitch. Though it rotated real fast initially, it runs at a more normal speed now. great rig for grinding. It comes without barrels and the left over six and 12 pound barrels from my dead friggin Lortones work swell on the MJR base unit. It'll hold one six and one 12 perfectly. I'm really liking the UV-10 industrial for vibe work but it did have a thin spot on the extra tub I got which wore through after about 6 months. The other tub seems to be holding up swell after more than a year.....Mel
