If I were working in Redding I would take a trip to Lassen Creek or Davis Creek for some cool obsidian.
Have a fun trip.............Tony

Anyone know if the Mt. Shasta area would be good for doing some rockhounding?

Try to find a book "Gem Trails of Northern California".

There is a rock store/museum in Red Bluff named Gaumer's that I was led to last year when I was in the Redding area. This place is definitely worth a visit. Also it is said that there is some nice material to be found out by Black Butte reservoir. It was to rainy when I went so I just checked out Gaumer's, really neat place.

So, how was the trip? I'm guessing that, by now, you've already been on your tour? Get a chance to do any digging?

The locations Fish listed are all a good days drive away from the places the OP is visiting, Lassen and Davis creek might still have some serious snow to contend with as it has been a very late winter. Stony Creek has some possibilities, but access is limited and this time of year the water is probably high enough to make collecting there a challenge. Id go with the suggestion of visiting Gaumer's in Red Bluff see if they have any local recommendations... Shasta has some cool stuff nearby, but again- still lots of snow up there, too.
