Howdy folks,
This morning I went to my first knap in over at Ft. Martin-Scott at Fredericksburg. Was told by JR of Riverbend Lapidary that knap ins are good place to find good cabbing rough. *L* JR hadn't shown before I had to leave but the knap in was a ball. Had a great knapping lesson by a world class knapper. Think his name was Ron Fuller. Anyway he took what I would have discarded as an impossible hunk of rock to knap and turned out a truly beautiful spear point ( have to admit it started as a big knife but it broke and he made the best of the leftovers). I also got some really nice rough from him at very low prices.
It was a good venue for rough rock. I saw Ammy sage, lots of mook, lots of indian bloodstone and fancy jasper, fancy obsidian and lots of misc jasper , agate, flint and chert in a marvelous array of colors and patterns. I may try to go back on Saturday to see if more folks including JR have shown up. Fun time though and I am very pleased with my buys and ready to hit the old flint pile again for some more knapping of my own. Any of you close by Fredericksburg, the knap in runs through Sunday and the fort is on 290 just outside town. Here are a couple of pics of my finds:
Burlington Chert ( heat treated):
Really awesome 6# piece of heat treated Mozarkite. Will have to break it to saw it but the shards I will knap or tumble:
Another Mozarkite. This one has a nice almost sagenitic or plumy pattern. All were less than $2 per pound;
