Howdy folks, Well, had me some spare time so I went back to the knap in again this morning. Good that I went because more vendors were set up and the rough rock was much more abundant. Plus the knapped artifacts on display were outrageous. As usual I forgot to take my camera but the highlights for me were a 12 inch exotic spear point of polka dot agate ( I did not know you could get an unfractured piece that big to start with), a 6 inch point of green Mexican Imperial jasper with tons of orbs, huge flint knives of the NW European viking type, and some terrific Indian Fancy Jasper Clovis type points. I had no idea you could flake that jasper than thin. Beautiful work. Anyway, I scored some more really nice cabbing and tumbling rough. Got about 15 pounds each of very pretty Mookite and of all things, the rare north Texas Alibates Flint that is now mainly in a park where collecting is not allowed. Got some to tumble and some large stuff to slab. Here are a few pics: The Mook. These are real solid and though barely chipped, show tins of cool color changes. Another Mook with dendrites and lots of color: Alibates flint: These are the smaller pieces for small slabs of tumbles. Really glassy and much prettier than in the pics.

I wonder if "butterscotch" jasper would be good for knapping?

Fossil: I spent a long time on that subject with some of the knappers and apparently, with few exceptions, jasper is really tough to knap and needs hot, 500 degree, heat treating before it's very workable. Same with most agate. Some flint is pretty workable raw and some does not have to be heated much above 400 degrees but again, most is easier on the tools if heat treated to the 500 degree mark. Fairly long and tedious process too as the material must be well dried before you raise the temps very much and the temp raise must be very gradual. Guess for most material it winds up being a multi day process per lot. Got to say though , no knapped tent pegs for these folks, some of their pieces were as thin as a credit card and most all, even really large knives were well under 3/16" or so at the thickest. Sure made me ashamed of my pitiful attempts *L*......Mel
