Newb question:
I noticed that borax is very gritty like fine sand. If you are burnishing with a few Tbls of borax and a spray of water, it obviously can't all dissolve.
Does it not scratch the stones because the borax crystals are much softer than stone?

It dissolves very easily in water. I use more than a spray when I burnish in my vibe. I assume that since you mentioned a "spray" you're using a vibe tumbler?

Yeah, Borax is soft ( mohs 2-2 1/2) so it won't scratch your stones. I stopped using it and switched to Dreft as a burnish though, due to the disposal problems. Borax is a powerful herbicide so you really have to watch where you dump your tumbler wastes to avoid killing your plants while Dreft is harmless to the environment.....Mel

Thanks for the tips on Dreft. I'll see if I can find it. I usually just dump used slurry in the woods behind my house and I don't want to kill all the plants.

Dreft is a powdered soap you find in the baby dept in stores. It's a great burnish. Can't remember who but someone here put me onto it....Mel

I've never had good luck with Borax, I use Ivory bar soap shavings instead....
