Man, The wife was off to do some volunteer work this afternoon and I had pretty much the whole day free to saw my petrified wood. But as usual, had to stop early because once again the gull danged Covington 10" saw's power feed quit turning. Quit on a really thin slab of wood ( about one inch thick by three inches long) and there was like no drag on the blade nor was the rock loose in the vice. Blade and motor running fast and free so I'm mystified as to why this happened again. Tried to adjust the clutch another half turn like the company rep showed me and the friggin power feed rod still won't turn. Power feed motor feels a little hot so maybe the saw is just not meant to run for a few hours straight with only an hour lunch break. I will have to call Covington again on Monday but I gotta say, this saw is proving to be a royal pain in the ass!
Another matter for any of you planning on buying a new 10 saw. The coolant feed on this rig is real touchy and that absent lip on the left side of the table I mentioned is proving to be another big fat pain. Too little coolant and your blade runs too hot and too much and you overflow the table top edge making a big mess. Don't know why they decided to make a substantial edge on the right side of the table and not the left as the hole in the plexi cover lets oil out on the left side real easy. A one inch lip would solve this problem.
Anyway, progress report is I'm up to about small slab number 50 and broke down and had to stop sawing for the second time so I ain't a real happy camper. I might add the old less complicated saw I had before cut larger rock and friggin never broke down till it finally shorted out, caught on fore and burnt up and it was like fifty years old and had gone through lots of blades and probably hundreds and hundreds of cuts. This new rig is like a month old and I'm already about ready to throw it out of the shop and pump a few rounds into t it.*L*.....Mel
