A friend gave me an old Black&Decker bench grinder. Is it any use at all for stones. I don't mean as is. Could you put a diamond disc or saw on it and some kind of water drip and using it as a trim device for small stones or slabs?

Sure, or put a chuck on one end and use for carving.
or
Use it for powering other arbors.
What rpm is it?
Uh OH...I hear there shock rangers coming!!!!
Don't get water in the motor and use a ground fault interrupt on it.
HAH! I beat them here!!!! ;D
Do a little searching in the Homemade section, we've talked alot about this.

I use several - I put graduated spindles on each end and can easily put polishing buffs or small grinding wheels for silversmithing. I used plastic tubs screwed into the motor to make larger safety shield, debris catchers.
