One of our earlier trips, last year or so, up in the San Gabriel Mountains. Had a picnic, nice hike, and along the way picked up some actinolite and quartz.

The San Gabriel's looking (more or less) south from where we were digging. And, as much as I appreciated the suggestion, I had to turn down a request from the boyz to go rockhounding on Mother's Day. I just didn't think Mommy would like to do that for Mother's Day. Thanks for checking out the thread.

Beautiful view and it sure looks like the boys were having a great time! Just be careful you don't wander into an area that doesn't allow rockhounding. There are far too many areas now... Fran

Those are two strong looking helpers you have there. Won't be long and they will be picking up the whole mountain to bring it home. You must be one proud papa. I really like the last pic too, very beautiful landscape.

Hi Fran: Yeah, no joke there. Andrew (the elder) helps me sometimes with reading through materials on where we can/cannot rockhound. Nathaniel has a good time being outdoors, in general. The last trip his primary purpose in coming along was not to rockhound but to watch the trains in Barstow.
Hi Sampson: Thanks, I am pretty proud of them. They just grow up so fast! Seems like just yesterday when we brought them home from the hospital. My Dad made a strong impression on me regarding spending time with the family, so my wife and I reserve most weekends for family-related activities.

Yeah, for Nathaniel, that means wiping his hands on Daddy's pant-leg! Andrew's more circumspect - he just uses his shirt, like any good boy. Drives Mommy nuts sometimes... ;D

;D Doctored it from the prior election. Still seems appropriate! ;D Indeed it does. Don't fear the hoplessness of our political system - embrace it!

My wife was having breakfast with a girlfriend from high school this morning so I asked they boyz what they'd like to do after Andrew finished up his homework. I figured that "breakfast" for the ladies means they wouldn't get back home until, oh, 1:30 or 2:00 PM. Nathaniel wanted to see the trains over by Wrightwood where Highways 15 and 138 intersect. There's a MacD's on the east side of 15 where you can watch the BNSF and UP trains wind their way through Cajon Junction. We figured, if there was time, we'd continue north to Barstow and visit the rail museum there. BNSF has the huge yard there so we were fairly certain of seeing some additional trains. Andrew requested that we also continue east to do some quick rockhounding, time permitting. Sounded like a great day for the boyz! So, after packing up the car and making sure that Andrew had completed his homework, off we went! We had lunch at MacD's and watched a pair of BNSF trains and a UP freighter go by. After about 45 minutes or so, we decided to head further north to Barstow. The boyz were carrying on in the back, playing and laughing, messing around with Nathaniel's Happy Meal toy when, about 10 minutes south of Barstow I hear a: "AAAUUUWWWKKK" and look in the rear-view mirror in time to see Nathaniel getting car sick and vomiting up the not-so-Happy-Meal. Andrew, being the good big brother that he is, immediately grabbed a handy towel and put it on Nathaniel's lap. We pulled over at the Tanger Outlet Mall and I cleaned up Nathaniel. "I want to go home, Daddy," said Nathaniel. That ended that trip. Felt so bad for the little guy.

One of the BNSF trains cruising up Cajon Junction that Nathaniel so enjoys.
