Hiya Folks,
Well the weekend came and went as they do - I found some time though and took an afternoon cabbing in the sunshine. Nice work if you can get it hey?! I wanted to use up the last of my settings and think about ordering another bundle. So I had a choice of 14x29mm bangle and satin pendant, and two pairs of 12mm satin inset earrings. Now I kind of dislike cutting earrings, they worry my perfectionist streak and I have to get them to match up or I can't set them. Anyway - here are the results and I was quite content with them. The bangle went immediately - a friend and regular customer knew I had something special when I got the little box out, I often give her first dibbs so to speak - because she then spends most of the day flouncing around the office and up to the tea room showing off her sparkles. And that often generates more interest and customers. Not that I can keep up anyway Hope you like 'em I certainly enjoyed cutting them.
I was chuffed with the Pendant and the earrings, they are nicely cut and fit well in their settings, although not the highest grade the stone had good movement. My alignment and polish helped to contrast the satin finish of the setting. Fun pieces. 2x12mm circles and a 14x29mm oval.
I like the blue variety - it's softer and cuts a gentle stone which springs to life when it's seen being worn. It's fun to polish but careful attention should be paid to getting the flash to align properly. There will always be a flash but presenting it to the viewer of the stone is important so I check mine with the sun behind me and holding the stone in front of me. twist and mark. Jobs a good 'un. 2x12mm circles.
The Charoite is the first of this mineral I have cut. The slabbette had a nice purple mossy appearance with patches of lighter material, and what seems like a hard agate or chalcedony infill. It's relatively hard and cuts nicely. Not splintery but I treated it delicately anyway. The surface alnost went to polish at 600 - and by 3000 it was bright. I was chuffed with the finished stone. Nice rounded dome and a good fit in the setting, no overcutting and a bright glossy shine. The purple mossy filaments are beautiful up close. Other darker green and pale tan coloured filaments and crystals pepper the matrix. It's fun stuff. 14x29mm oval.
Hope you enjoyed them. Thanks for looking.
Cheers,
Harry.
