Just started using a new Loratone QT-12. I only loaded it with about 8 lbs of material and water to the bottom of the top layer of material. My question: is it normal for the motor housing to be hot to the touch?

Yes, welcome! More important than weight is having barrel 2/3-3/4 full. If too heavy use ceramic filler media.
