We drove up to the show today to set up TWO!! display cases. One is our regular case and the other is a competition case. This is a first for us because we have never entered into the competition arena before. We entered the cabochon category. Of course the liners that we made to their quoted sizes were almost the right size. They didn't specify that the dimensions given were the case size not the liner sizes. The person that I talked to a couple weeks ago insisted that the dimensions were the sizes that the liners were to be made to. We had to dash to the nearest hardware store to get a cutter, a 4 foot straight edge and some clear tape to resize the liner pieces. It worked out OK after a couple hours extra work, though. The judging is tomorrow. There are a lot of dealers with some potentially great slabs, after getting a quick preliminary look at their goods. Lots of super displays, too. I'll get some photos to post (when I get back home). Talked briefly with Bob Jones (of Rock & Gem Magazine fame). He is going to give some talks throughout the show days. It looks like we will be having an enjoyable 3 day weekend. Bob

Good luck. We tried their show last year. They had, it seemed, two hundred dealers and 50 customers. Can't stand the clubs that saturate a show with as many dealers as they can squeeze in just so they can rake in more dealer fees. That is all too common at CA federation shows. Too many dealers, too high booth fees, too high ticket/parking charges to discourage attendance. You should enjoy the show with the presentations, displays, and potential to buy from many dealers.

John, We went to the show last year and saw the "dealer packing" that went on. When I talked to the show chairman he said they had extra dealers so that they could get a feel for how the show workload would be when the Federation show occurred this year. I felt that this was very unfair for the dealers to be using them as guinea pigs for this purpose. I definitely don't blame any dealers for not showing up this year. I haven't had a chance to see who all of the dealers that show up this year. On another note our club - the Mother Lode Mineral Society - is making a bid for the Federation show next year. We have a large club - close to 300 members - so our workload for a federation show shouldn't be too much more. Bob

Its a great show with a lot of dealers that have some super material both expensive and cheap. And.................... yippee!!! We won first place in our cabs category (CC-1) at the master level. We got a score of 98 points. I really didn't expect to do that well since it is the first time we have entered in any competition. It was a lot of hard work and stress dealing with the fitting of the case liners and anxious anticipation waiting for the results this evening. It was very interesting seeing the score sheet with all the comments from the three judges. Because we had never experienced this before we had no idea of the details of the process nor how or what the judges each individually are looking for. After the show is over we will be studying these comments in detail so we can learn from it if we decide to enter competition in the future. Took more photos of the cases and as I said before I will post them on Monday after we get home. Bob

Congrats Bob. I am trying to finish 5 agate cabs for my contribution to a community competitive case at the NW federation show in July. By all means show pics. If your club gets next years show be sure to post the news, my daughter lives about an hour away in Manteca so maybe I could come down for a "visit".
