Hmmm... I am just wondering if regular river rocks (like the ones you get from lowe's or home depot) shine after the polish - or do they just get more refined? I just finished my 1st batch and they aren't shiny... or did I do something wrong? I have a Thumbler's 18v....
TIA! Jan

probably went wrong orhad some contamination in the load, clean it all up and run the last two stages again for two weeks each, sandstone type stones will not polish, you need harder rock, so it does depend on what you got.

I don't think you did anything wrong. I have checked out their rocks, even bought some for grit carriers, not good, no polish. Now driveway gravel.

Aha.. ok.. I may have had a mixture.. Some started to polish but it doesn't look like they polished thoroughly. I don't have a separate barrel to use for my polish stage for my uv 18 so maybe i'll use my uv-3 and pre-polish some of them again.. and change the barrel for the polish section.
Also - after I rinsed off the stones I had some "white specks" of stuff floating around in the water after it was clear of the polish... hmm...

I bought a large bag of this kind of rock at Lowe's several weeks ago. Opening the bag and eying them skeptically I decided they'd be better used in the driveway. :-)

I have found Lake Superior Agates in the landscaping river rock used in the "islands" in the parking lot at Home Depot, but I'm not telling you where that was.

Yes, it would depend on where the rocks are from. In SO CAL the river rocks will polish nicely as they are mostly granite with quartz and feldspar but color is pretty boring. You would be better off buying tumbling rock from Rock Shed or checking the gravel at aquarium shops. Broken or freshly broken edges should be glossy.

Most lanscape rock sold in the Big Box stores are not really "keepers" Most of the stuff is sandstone, limestones, or low grade marble. Go to a "real" landscaping store and you could very well find some quartz, pet wood, agate, jasper "keepers". Best of luck

Several years ago on our way home from out rocking, our Jeep had an electronic failure in Bend, OR that meant a night stay in the nearby [to the repair shop] Sleep-Inn motel. In the rock landscaping around the building we found several nice agates; termed them Sleep-Inn agate. Made reference to them at our next club meeting, one old time member said "Sleep-Inn agate, never heard of the stuff".
