Howdy folks, Was only able to cut a couple of more slabs as I really really need to clean out the saw oil. I love to cut the rocks but hate the whole saw cleaning thing *L*. Anyway, a few pics of what I cut: ......Mel Last slab off that one Texas wood stump. Really heavily agatized. Have had this chunk of self collected California Lavic Siding Jasper sitting around for awhile so I finally slabbed it up. Closer look:

Yeah, the year before I moved to Texas, the wife and I discovered a new area for Lavic type jasper that is near Lavic but not in the old heavily collected area. I scored enough really primo material to suit my needs for a long time. I just wish I lived closer as that was really a terrific hunting location and we had barely scratched the surface before the move....Mel

I hear ya Mel. I think I still have a few chunks of Lavic from the original location in a bucket in my shed. Stuff I collected in the mid 90's. Don

Hi Mel, We're fortunate to only live 2 1/2 hours away from Lavic and have visited that site 4 times this year. Have 2 buckets of rock to play with. The rail road in the area didn't put in any crossings which are listed in all the Gem Trail books and maps. Now you have to back track west 3 miles on the highway, get on the southern side of the tracks and drive back to Lavic on the wash boarded utility road. Think that is how the rail roads, BLM & tree huggers work together to discourage people from exploring the deserts. When they lay new track, leave out the crossings. Jerks. Northern section of Lavic is pretty much picked over. We have a Jeep so we head into the southern section and there is lots of material all over the place. Many varieties to pick from. Our first 3 visits was to collect tumbler size stones and we left anything over 2" in size! Stupid huh? That was pre 10" Covington saw days and we didn't know any better. Now we grab anything that will fit into my bucket. That area plus north of there along the Cady Mountains has some great collecting sites. Now there's talk of them closing it all down and become either wilderness areas, proposed solar power locations or military base expansions. We're enjoying it while we can. Larry

Great photos, Mel! Beautiful pieces. And the Lavic pieces are pretty stunning.
Larry, thanks for the additional information on the Lavic site. My older son has been asking to go to that site for several weeks now. Sounds like it's changed from the Gem Trails books (which we've been using).
Thanks Paul
