I recentl; ordered some SC belts, cerium oxide, and grit from Johnson Brothers, a frequent advertiser in Rock and Gem. It was not a pleasant experience.
I waited 2 weeks and no shipment. I called their customer service number, previouslty having received a notice the order was "awaiting fulfillment" without further comment. the representative informed me the cerium was on back order, but they expected a shipment in just a few days. So, I waited another 2 weeks. no package.
I called back. I was told that the cerium did not come in. It appears most is coming from China and there were availability problems. I told the representative (always the same gentleman, with what sounds like an Indian accent) to cancel the cerium and send the rest of my order. I waited another two weeks, and no shipment.
i called back again, and was told the shipment was damaged and returned to them. Apparently they dropped the ball. I was assured the order would go out right away. It was over a week before I received the package, which was a little overstuffed but intact. When I checked my paypal account, though, i noticed I had not been credited for the cancelled cerium oxide. i called them and the error was corrected.
Johnson Brothers has really attractive prices but in the future m,y business will go elsewhere. They should have kept me informed, they should have posted on their site that the cerium was currently out of stock, and they should have immediately credited me for the cancelled item. I wonder if anyone else has had a similar experience with them?

I wish I could say but too afraid of slander suits. I will say they are working their way into every show in the Western states selling pretty much wholesale to the public. It doesn't go well with retail dealers but apparently the clubs sponsoring the shows don't mind losing dealers to get lower prices. I will say when I did buy from them (after new owner acquired) I had to get current price before ordering.

Other than the items I ordered, they didn't really offer that much of a discount over other vendors (or you). their customer service sure sucks.

I had a similar experience a couple of years ago with American Lapidary Wholesalers. I ordered 2 6"x1-1/2" wheels and 4 6"x1-1/2" diamond belts. Two of the belts were the wrong grit when they finally arrived and one of the belts was the 2-1/2" instead of the 1-1/2" belt. I ended up having to mark a line on the inside of the belt and trimming it down. I was afraid of what would happen if I sent that one back.
That said, I have had some great experiences with other folks.

Hi Doc,
Sorry to hear about your bad experience. I posted my experiences with them about 6 months ago. Not as bad as yours, but I had to keep hounding them to get the items shipped. Cheapest prices I could find, but what a hassle.

So, I guess it's not a one time bad deal situation.

I am new to this site, and not known. But I live about 5 miles from JB. If needed I can drive over to their store and clear up any problems anyone has. I do intend on buying from JB. to save shipping charges.
Glad to help. Contact me at catonjohn@rocketmail.com

Do they still deliver large orders for free? - A relative of mine many years back (before they changed) only ordered through JB. However he ordered such large orders they would deliver for free in a Ryder or Uhaul truck a couple times a year.

Somehow I doubt they would be so generous with their pricing as it is. I would also buy from them again if I could pick up locally and be done with it.

When Ed Johnson owned it they were wholesale only. Discounts were quantity based. They would deliver larger orders in their own truck but on routes not immediately.

We bought a few things from them in Madras. They had saw oil at $65 a bucket for food grade mineral oil, I couldn't pass on that. I don't think I would mail order from them though.

Wow, sorry to hear about that. At least you weren't transferred to an off-shore call center.
