Justin,
That turned out absolutely AMAZING!!! Thank you so much! Sadie is my Dad's best friend and she never leaves his side.....ever! This birthday present is just going to be so special!
I am amazed at all that you do, rocks, cnc lithophanes, musical marimba instruments for your daughter's school... You are one talented person and I truly thank you for making this for my Dad's birthday!
You rock!!!

I think it turned out well because it's such a great picture of Sadie. I just let the computer do all the work so I don't have much artistic input. On the other hand, the wraps you did for my daughters and wife definitely showed off your artistic talents. I guess if I rock, then you wrap! Justin

If you're interested in some details, send me a PM and I can go through the process that I use. Justin

that really cool technology and you got the tweaks to make it work
is it like dremel burr that doing the cutting? is the machine's axis like a etch-a-scetch ? with an up & down?
not important jus thinking out loud
nice gift!

Now that is really cool! Nice work Justin.
Did you build the CNC machine yourself, or is it an off the shelf unit?

I'm using a Proxxon grinder which is a step-up from a Dremel. I have a little ball end mill (0.04 inch diameter) that does the carving. You can think of it as a small diameter drill bit that has a spherical radius at the tip. The machine has 3 axes (x, y, and z) so it is kind of like an etch-a-sketch with an up-n-down (z axis). Each axis is driven by a precision screw and a stepper motor which is controlled by the computer. If the computer tells the motor to turn one full rotation, the axis moves 0.1 inches. The computer basically tells each motor to turn a certain amount at what time and you can make stuff. It's fun stuff.

Nate Nate, I scrounged the basic unit (3 axis table) from the old Boeing surplus store (before it closed). Imagine a huge warehouse full of tools, office supplies, raw materials, and machines. Then got the electronics and motors from ebay and wired everything up. Definitely learned a lot about the electronics and how to control the motors. Then had to get some software and learn how to use it. I've got another smaller machine that is meant for cutting metal and I think I'll try engraving or carving some stone with it but that's another project. I'm also working on a larger machine. Justin

I meant to comment on this the other day, that's really a neat set up and fantastic results! I'm sure Krystee's Dad will be thrilled! I've seen some incredible laser etched agates on the Superagates site, I imagine they are done in a similar fashion?

Justin, My Dad was leaving this morning to go back to Lummi Island, so we had an early birthday celebration. HE LOVED THE LITHOPHANE!!!!!!!!!!! He walked straight outside into the little bit of sunshine we had today and admired it for 10+ minutes! He had all sorts of questions (which I couldn't answer ) and was amazed that you did that without a laser. I couldn't have asked for a more memorable expression on his face, he was a kid all over again! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!! ~Krystee

Krystee,
Awesome! I'm glad your Dad liked it. If he's interested, you could show him the video of the machine carving the picture. I'm sure he can figure out how it's done. If he has further questions, you can send him my e-mail address.
