Hello everyone travelling to Utah this year and hope to make it out to the dugway geode area. I am travelling mid-summer so know my collecting time will likely be short due to the heat, and that the rest of the family won't be too interested in roasting out there. Wondering if any members have any tips on best spots to try to maximize my diggings? Also, sounds like most are actually geodes but occassionally you see some nice solid filled agate nodules - are these luck of the dig, or does anyone know if certain areas/layers yield more solids than hollows? Thanks in advance Chris

Technically they are thunder eggs. The eggs closest to the surface tend to be hollow with quartz crystals inside, while the ones deeper in the ground are more solid with agate. Look for layers of white clay in the digging area, as this is where the thundereggs are found. I would work existing pits that other people have dug and just continue to work the eggs out of the clay layer. you will need shovels, buckets and all manner of digging tools. Be sure you have lots of water, spare tire, etc...it's a long drive out to the middle of nowhere.
