Inspired by Mel's recent expedition and reminders of Matt Dillon's shrinkwood, I thought I would ask if anyone is interested in heading to the George West area to do some roadside rockhounding in the coming weeks.
I know it is hot as blazes, but I just feel like I need the kind of soul cleansing only rockhounding can achieve. And the opportunity to find some shrinkwood makes all the more worth it.
Anybody interested?

Good golly Matt, I hike like a couple of hours everyday to stay in shape for the heat and it's about killing me off and that area is much more humid than here too. Felt like a sauna when we were there a few weeks ago and it was like 10 degrees cooler then. Plus those gravel roads reflect the heat like a griddle. Think I'll forgo my next hunt until maybe October. Would be better in my opinion to wait for some heavy rain anyway as more wood and agate would be exposed.....Mel

True that, Mel, it will be hot and humid as all get out. And, in fact, I am waiting on some rain -- just like the rest of Texas! Not just for the break but in hopes that it exposes more. Hell, I'm even thinking about going in the rain if enough storms blow in to cover the four-hour trip. I hear what you are saying, though.

I drove across from highway 37 to 281 along the south edge of George West last week. I was coming back from San Antonio and looking for a bridge across the Nueces I'd spied on Google Earth. It turned out to be a single lane bridge made of pipe and planks at the end of FM151. Pretty interesting. I drove onto a country road that had been bladed across the tops of rolling caliche domes. That road glowed white like it had just been pulled out of a forge. I stepped out of my truck to look for rocks a couple of times but only found flint nodules an a small piece of pet wood. It was 109F. The chain and cross around my neck reminded me that silver is a great thermal conductor. I have to go by there again next week on my way to San Antone. If I see buzzards I'll bring you some water.

How does tomorrow or Tuesday sound? The temp is supposed to top out at ~99F with 5-16mph breeze. I'm totally green when it comes to this area, especially the back roads, but there seems to be plenty of them.
