Hey all, My family is going to June Lake the first week of August. Now I love camping and hiking, but add rockhunting to that list and I'm in heaven. I've never been to this area of Ca/Nv and I looked it up and it's about 100 miles from Coaldale NV, a center of huntin' for a long time. I have several books for that area, but some date back to the 1950's and I know the road conditions have changed. Anyone have any easy huntin' sites in the Coaldale region I might be able to roam and enjoy? I am planning on hitting the Sump to take some photos as well. You can see this location on the Dzrtgrls website: dzrtgrls.com/queen_obsidian_sump/queen_obsidian_sump.htmlIf you haven't been to this website, it's a killer place to browse to see what southern california has to offer in the desert for hiking, old mining camps, indian pictographs, and rockhounding. Anyways, any advice would be appreciated. Lowell

Hey Lowell, You'll enjoy that trip. Sher and I went all through there on the trip we took up to the Dryhead Agate diggings. We hit "the sump". Wood we found there was not of lapidary quality but the apache tear hunting was good in the area and we found some nice moss agate on the hills to the NW. We also hit Gabbs which had lots of opalized wood for tumbling but the big stuff was mostly gone without a lot of digging and what big stuff we saw was very fractured. Lots of apache tears there too. Also hit Fish Lake Valley. Didn't find much in the way of wood there but lots of apache tears and a few rattlesnakes. Goldfield of course ,has the gem claims if you can get in touch with the guy and make sure it's open. Lots of good stuff there. We also hit a bunch of ravines on the main road north from Tonopah that were full of nice agatized wood and limb cast material. My map shows this as just north of the junction of HWY 6 and 8A east of Tonopah. Always wished I spent more time there as the area looked real good and the samples I picked up were excellent material. Aside from that, all my hunting was in extreme N Nevada.....Mel

Hi Lowell - we'll be up there at the end of August. I hope you folks have a great time. Unfortunately, I don't know the Coaldale region but am well familiar with the Dzrtgrls site. Those ladies do a great job with the trip reports and they're great photographers. If you get out there, I'd love to see your trip report, particularly since we'll be up there about two weeks behind you! You and Mel always have great trip reports.
