A friend is taking her 20-year old niece to NYC in August. She asked for good ideas. Anybody know of any good rock shops in NYC? There has GOT to be some. It's NYC!

Like Roller, I've never been there but I have heard that Astro Gallery is a great place to go. I got their address from one of their items that I am bidding on from ebay. Hope this doesn't reach you too late.
Astro Gallery of Gems 185 Madison Avenue New York, NY 10016 TEL: (212) 889-9000

Go visit ROCK STAR CRYSTALS, a small but overstocked rock shop in midtown Manhattan in NYC. This place is a rockhound's dream, and you can spend hours there. www.rockstarcrystalsmanhattan.com for info or call 212 675 3065. They are located at 150 w 28th St, Suite 201B on the second floor between 6th and 7th Ave.

AstroGallery always had more lapidary material on ebay than on display in their store. I visited some years back and was very surprised that none of the stuff they were selling on ebay was in the store. It is not the kind of place that has bins or rock, but rather a gallery with high end fossils, minerals, and finished pieces. I was told that some employees handled ebay sales out of an offsite warehouse.
They now sell on ebay as MTMineral, and I think they have good rocks form south America. But, I would not expect to find these rocks i their midtown gallery - that real estate is too expensive to have a rockyard.
