i went to burp the 12# barrell that has been running 11 days in 60/90 with a recharge this past saturday (i added some new rough but same type rough when i recharged) and when i opened the barrell they stank to high heaven. it is filled with 2 types of rocks that i hammer busted that were in the rock garden - one looks like a picture jasper and the other is light blue grey - they are both coming along beautifully - why did they stink so today? i poured off the water (there was still some good grit in there), added more water and grit, gave them a good sniff and put them back tumbling. i had to cut the vent-a-hood on when i opened them and turn my head sideways to carry them out to pour the water off. have y'all had that happen? any ideas?

Since Michigan used to be on the bottom of the ocean, we have a lot fossiliferous rock here. Most of it is quite soft, but some of it is very hard, in the 6.5-7.0 neighborhood. When I throw some of that material into a batch, they will give up a pretty bad odor. It's worst during the rough and medium grinds, but eases up in final two cycles because you're just not taking enough material off to release the gas. I can also have it happen if I don't get all of the lichen cleaned off before I tumble. It will start to decay in the barrel and will smell like a compost pile when you open it. Usually a tsp of baking soda thrown in when I run either of those two conditions will help a lot.

thanks ron - i wonder why i didn't notice it any of the other times i burped it or when i recharged it or was it not there before because it wasn't something i could have missed today. the blue/grey rock was the one i added more of when i recharged so i'm thinking it is the cause of the smell. i'll post some pics of it in the rough when i get home and see if any of y'all know what it is that i'm tumbling (cause i sure don't). it is sure looking good so far whatever it is (even if it did make a stink).

Hey Kim. Some minerals just have a bad smell associated with them. If you just bang two rocks together and one of them is sulfur bearing, you will get a rotten egg smell. I'd have to dig out some old text books to refresh my memory on exactly which minerals have what smell. These rocks won't smell like that when you find them due to the layer of oxidation that forms on the outside from weathering.
