At Bear Creek, an area set aside for rock hounding by BLM near Prineville Oregon, you can find petrified wood that can be very colourful......most is black, and white, but we found a large tree where the wood was both agatized, and jasperized in very nice colours. When we (me) hit five feet deep, I was done digging, and the material was getting better. It was sunny, quite warm, and the soil was hard. Here are some photographs. What a beautiful day, place, and material. Doesn't get much better tha that, huh Woody?
One question. Ho do you know that's pet wood? I would have no clue that's wood if I found it.
Thanks, Nate

That looks like fun, Woody, even if it includes hard work! Are you sure that's Bear Creek in Oregon? Sure looks a lot like South Texas Hill Country! LOL!

Looks like you did a lot better than I did at the Joe McDonald ranch. Oh well, we had fun at the show, met a few new people, got a few rocks and a sunburn.

Nate:
The petrified tree we dug on was mostly agate replacement, i.e. a really big limb cast, like three feet in diameter. The outer surface was a good bark cast. there was very little material showing cell structure.
Slab photographs tomorrow. Woody
