Howdy folks, Was able to win a box of Keokuk geodes for the kids, on E-Bay the other day. Had the Workforce out for a preform trimming session so I went ahead and cut all 160 of the 1-2 inch geodes. Turned out to be a nice batch, about 80% hollow with maybe 60% being very nice. The rest were solids or duds. Anyway, here's a pic of the nicer ones from the box. Got to admit, I kept out a couple for myself, one with smoky quartz, one with secondary pyrite and another that was just real nice quartz crystals with some odd spheres atop the crystals......Mel ![](http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b377/sabre52/DSCN6571.jpg)

Those look pretty typical of Jacobs bed, except not as much kaolinite as I normally find. Did you get wash it out, or did you just not have much?
Did you find any marcasite?
They're fun to cut, regardless. I'd also like to see the closeups.

Chuck: Maybe six or eight had the kaolinite which did wash out easily revealing some pretty cool crystal formations. I'm not a mineral guy so the one I thought was pyrite may be marcasite because the crystals look a bit iridescent and are not real cubic looking. These geodes are super fun to cut and the cheap blade on the Workforce buzzed through them with ease showing almost no additional wear to the diamonds.
Ted: As you've said, the spheres appear to be chalcedony over some sort of other mineral, maybe goethite or something of that sort.
I'll see if I can take a couple of closeups but my camera has really bad depth of field when in macro so the deep geodes are hard to photograph.
