Interesting stones for sure. What was your recipe for tumbling?

Hi Toad. Well, Started all of them in 60 grit S/C. The smaller ones were done in a couple weeks and the larger took a few more weeks, (in 60). A good amount of those went into 80 Grit S/C for a few more weeks. Again, most of the small ones were ready for Med. When all were ready, they went into 220 grit S/C, and that was about 2-3 rounds of 10 days each. They were very hard. Now maybe the next step was overkill but they all went into 400 grit S/C for 12 days and then 600 S/C for about 2 weeks. I 'burnished' them after that and then they went into pre-polish for 10 days. Burnish again and then into A/O polish for 2 weeks. Burnish, then into Cerium Oxide for another 2 weeks. A final burnish (Ivory flakes). And done.

goodonya mate, thats a pretty fine looking batch of agates they must be pretty tough little critters them oilers, and you have obtained a fantastic finish. the ones on the white background in that last pic are exceptional. and well worth the effort you put in. Bill P.S congrats on your 100th post

Great pieces, thanks for posting. We tried to get out there last year while we were on vacation. About 30 minutes out, after driving down Highway1, Andrew looked up and said, "Mommy, I feel sick" and vomited all over the back seat. Bad combination of twisty highway and looking DOWN at his DS. LOL. So, we got to the outskirts of Bolinas only to stop, clean up and turn around to head back to my parent's place.
How was the collecting out there? Those are really nice and we'd love to go back but the drive was a bit of a pain.
Cool stuff! Paul

Those are very nice! They remind me of the so called moonstone type agates from some of the beaches south of San Mateo that I used to hunt as a kid.....Mel

Are any of these enhydros?
This is really crazy. It's the second time in 24 hours where I'm thinking about some type of rock and then come to RTH and see the actual rock!
The first one was with the bronze obsidian that Stoneviews posted in the Cab section.
I was just reading June Culp Zeitner's book Lapidary Materials. On page 123, she describes what she calls "Bolinos Oil Agates". (Of course, it should be spelled Bolinas.)
Nice job!!

Thanks, Bill. Always so good to hear from you! Paulshiroma, it's a very cool place to get to. Nice and family friendly. But as you approach, off highway 1, you have to watch your mileage because the locals have removed the Bolinas turn-off sign. Once down in there, you have to walk up, north, the beach about a 1/4 mile or so to where a little canyon opens up onto the beach and there you can start to find the agates. There is also some jade and jasper there and I've even found some whale bone there. Just keep an eye on the tides, as they come in quick. Good luck when you go. It's very beautiful there.
