I'm heading to Southern Colorado in September, specifically the Pagosa Springs area. Does anyone know if there is any decent rock hunting in a hundred mile range of that area and if so, what kind of material?
Thanks, Jon

If you go East to South Fork and turn north to Creade there is a very nice fee dig at an old mine above the town. Amethyst lace agate and $2 per lb. when I was there last. Right in Creade you can find amethyst in the stream at north end of town. Some very interesting old mine sites just up the road too. If you go west to Durango turn north to Silverton. Follow the road on north to a camping area/old mining district. On the flat below the old stamp mill you can find very nice rhodonite.

Creede is a wondreful place .The Last Chance mine ( for collecting sowbelly agate with raw silver in it ) is open on weekends and sometimes weekdays. However Jack does close after labor day you can try to call him or email 719-238-7959 jack@lastchancemine.com He has been known to set up sepcial openings. I was there in June and got lots of great material , , he has things from all over the state, some amozonite from Lake George I helped furnish. Then you can go on to the four corners area and ryolite is abundant Contact Four Corners Rocks Daniel fourcornersrocks@hotmail.com www.fourcornersrocks.ecrater.com Great guy and will help ya. If ya come across the continental divide I will be glad to give ya aid . You are entering the mineral belt of Colorado and great numbers of rocks and specimens avail. Breckenridge dealors have some rhodochrocite -wow. Dicky

Yes! The Last Chance Mine is the one I went to. I was going to mention the locals call it "sow belly" but it doesn't do it justice.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll definitely have to check out last chance mine! It's only about 70 miles from where I'm staying. Anything to the south into New Mexico?

Farmington's club favorite collecting spot is above the Silverton location I mentioned up at the actual mine up a terrible road. Other than that the only places anyone mentioned to me is on the Indian lands.
