Hi everyone! A friend and myself are heading to the east coast of Scotland (Dundee to Montrose)for a week of hiking, camping and rock hunting in mid august. We are particularly interested in agates, and although we intend to stick to the coast-would happily trundle off in any direction where these lovely stones may be found! If there is anyone ,pretty please!,who can point us in the right direction(s),then please do so,we are both new to this, and would welcome any help.Advice on best places to wild-camp also welcome, many thanks! John.

Hello again everyone,we have returned from our trip to scotland, and thanks to Jack(yorkshire),found our first agates, and not a few jaspers etc-hope you enjoy the pics. All the best, will post more as we progress. We had a fantastic time, already planning another trip-can't wait,John. -I have a few more photos to post, including a map of the 70/80 miles of coast we covered in the 6 days we were there, ps sorry about the quality, will try for better! Ok people, in a bumbling way it seems I somehow managed to get some of our pics up,but in no particular order and without comments-so I will attempt to come back and modify, add some comments and put this post in order! Please give me a little time-I need It,lol-hope you enjoy what's there in the meantime.John.

Wonderful agates. I can't imagine the thrill of just picking up a rock like that. In New Orleans we don't have rocks, we have mud.
Would love to take a hiking/backpacking trip in Scotland but since I don't drive on that side of the road, I always wonder if it is too difficult to get out into the countryside and this has caused me to hesitate from booking a trip. The tours are too expensive for me since the pound is so strong relative to the dollar. In the U.S. you really have to be able to drive to get to the best parks and hiking, but I don't know if they have better public transportation in Scotland.

Thanks for all of your comments-I was beginning to wonder if anyone would bother, lol! The whole trip was amazing,I really can't begin to describe to people just how fantastic Scotland really is-I am still working on some kind of commentary for each picture, and have a few more pictures to add,but am unsure about how to edit/add text-so I guess it's a work in progress, hope you can all hang on until I get it sorted(help is very welcome!)We backpacked from a camping base each day to an agreed destination, using local buses where available, but you are right Peachfront,a heck of alot of walking was necessary to reach some of the prime spots. The beauty of it was that we hardly saw a soul on most of the beaches, apart from the odd climber or two,and the bus drivers were happy to drop us wherever we asked.Even in the most remote places buses run every hour or so-although we had to hike for a few miles to reach the bus stops. To my mind it was more than worth the effort, now i'm sitting here with some lovely rocks, telling myself what a lucky guy I am,and I honestly can't wait to go back there-the peace, the tranquillity, the fresh air-the rocks,lol-I could go on and on-If any of you ever make It over-give me a shout,I would be more than happy to point you in the right direction, just as Jack from Yorkshire did for us-what goes around comes around, peace, love and happy hunting to you all! Rock on-John.

Thanks, that's good information to know. If the bus drivers will work with me to get me where I need to be, that's extremely helpful. I can hike for miles, no problem about the hiking part, I was more worried about being able to get to the hiking part, if you know what I mean.

Yeh,totally understand where you are coming from,we had to wing it,but believe me,it was all far easier than we thought it would be,and far more worthwhile,if we had wheels we could have come back with a lot more-but we are not greedy, and there really is plenty to go around-more for next time if you like.I reckon the bus drivers know us better than their own families, some of them gave us some some real leg-ups-like"-wait until we get up the hill, you don't want to get off here",sort of thing-without doubt they saved us many miles of extra walking, which was a real bonus on the way back to our tents carrying a few kilos of rock.I honestly think that the majority of Scottish folk went out of their way to help us,once they understood what we were there for, even to the point of showing us the best places to eat!Try the fish-wow! it is so fresh-a seriously good/feelgood place all round,we made some good friends, and had some great evenings with the locals-but then we are Londoners-you either love us or you hate us,lol. If you make it over-give us a shout, would be happy to introduce you to some folk-all the best,John.
