the flutes look like Opal. way the chips are. Hardness check would help to I.D. it. Use a sharp edge of a quartz chip or agate. Pocket knife, deep scratch.
the material looks like it is from Ken`s mines. on opal butte.
Face slab polish may show a rainbow of color.

Could that be a rare blue sunstone? One like this? www.facetersguild.com/2012/02/stolen-oregon-sunstones/IF it's a sunstone from that mine, and they can do testing to tell the exact mine your stone came from and you can help some people who worked for years to mine this stuff and lost their life savings. It looks a lot like the blue one top row of the individual samples, 2nd from left. ![](http://www.worldgemsociety.org/Newsletter/SunstoneButte/WGS5.jpg) Here is more info about the theft: www.icontact-archive.com/l-xV4bIuEzDeaYx0sgzRb5yFv7dV50WF?w=4That said, OBVIOUSLY they were mining and selling plush oregon sunstones BEFORE the theft, and are STILL selling them, so not every piece of that type would be related to the theft. If it IS plush oregon sunstone at all. But you said someone just 'gave it to you'. Well if it IS oregon sunstone (and of course it may not be), what they just 'gave' you, judging by the size of the piece in the pix, is worth thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars rough. Here are some for sale: doubleeaglemine.com/Rough.htmlOf course, it could be opal... just never seen common opal with the color hidden inside and 'floating' like that. But it does seem more translucent than the sunstones (which are more transparent). But it also seems the sunstones 'chip' on the edges like yours is, and like glass, as well as has small whiteish 'floaters' inside. Here's a sample $3200 piece from the above website: ![](http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-52946715379071_2198_1406634) Easy way to tell, opal is around 5.5 hardness, and the sunstone is 6.8-7.2 hardness. Try scratching your piece with a sharp agate slab edge. If it won't scratch.. it might be a sunstone... opal should get scratched by a sharp agate edge. I am NOT saying it's stolen, but if it's a sunstone, that's quite a gift:).

Well Helen this post was started before the sunstone was stolen so i think we can rule that one out. :nono: If you would have looked at the size of the stone that would have told you it could not be a sunstone its to big.Opal seems to be the consensus here i am leaning that way to. George

George, I didn't say it was stolen. I said it MIGHT be sunstone and not glass or opal, because there are sunstones that look like that. And it happened to LOOK LIKE the sunstone from the mine that was stolen from. Again, the mine that got their sunstone stolen from them was selling them before and after the theft, and are still selling them right now.
But, good point on the date of the note, I didn't catch that at the time I responded. Still, for anyone who missed the stolen bulletin, it's another heads up:).
Not sure where you get the 'too big' from. The ruler on his stone shows 3" x 1" roughly. The fingers holding the sunstone in the photos I linked are AT LEAST 1/2" wide. I judge this by the fact that I have thin long fingers on a feminine hand, and mine are 1/2" wide. Now going by 'fingers' and their spreads, you can see that the largest sunstone the guy is holding is around 3". Same size as the stone he posted.

It does kind of have the look of iris agate (Google it! - you'll enjoy the photos, anyway), but it's probably just common opal. Jean
