I use my scanner all the time for smaller and flatter rocks. Just be careful, you can scratch the glass really easy.

I've been having the same problem with my camera and started using my scanner. It works well, but you can't get very creative with it. Here a wrap that I scanned. ![](http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g15/kjohn0102/BlueLace.jpg)

Yeah, there are some scratches on my scanner glass. Also only the flat stuff works real well. I use it for slabs. Scan them in their own puddle of water.

This sounds like a good idea. I have two digital cameras, and neither one can take a very good close up picture. Never thought about the scanner until now.

That's an interesting way to take a pic... ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) It has a very unique photographic quality to it. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) What I have is one of the last few remaining 4800dpi true resolution (non-interpolated) 16bit SCSI scanners that are still operational. ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) You can't buy them like this anymore because they could "technically" be used to forge money etc. and have not been available to the general public for quite awhile. Only problem is it wont run on an Athlon system, only the older P3/AMDk6 II-III MB's will run the SCSI 1.0 bus. ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png) Other than that it works like a hot damn and bloody memory intensive too! I could scan a postage stamp into a 270MB raw image file and print it out to an 11"x13" at 720dpi and it would pretty much look like a photolab blow-up. ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) Anyone want to buy it? Comes with a cable, power cord & pc drivers (if I can find the disk) ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) Only $400 Cdn. +shipping and it's yours. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) "INSURANCE OPTIONAL" ;D

LOL LCARS! Do you have the computer to run it also? After all, it sounds like you might need an upgrade... ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) cpdad - one trick I've discovered with the scanner is to place something dark in between the item being scanned and the top of the scanner. I had a horrible time with my graphics scanner washing out my stones otherwise requiring color balancing and other fine tuning just to get it to look right. Covered it with a mid-tone and it worked great!

I avoid the scratches with saran wrap over the glass, just being careful not to move stones with sharp edges much. Also use a puddle of water like deb193 said, it brings out a lot of detail.

The camera I have doesn't take great close up pictures so almost all of my pictures I post come from my scanner, once scanned I take it to one of the picture programs on my computer and crop the picture which usually makes it zoom in a little bit, then I take it to another program that is a little easier to use to resize the picture if it needs to be resized, and then download it to photobucket. What a great way to take close ups!! I've got a project that I'm doing for deb193 and using my all in one HP will be a nice test for my computer and printer/scanner! Now to go through all my manuals and find that d@*n book for the HP!!
