Hi folks. I'm new here. My brother in law introduced me to the hobby earlier in the year. I've been waiting to purchase a tumbler until I felt like the hobby wasn't just a passing fad for me. It's been about six months now and I find myself constantly looking at stones and rocks and wondering how they would look polished up. I decided that the hobby wasn't going to wear off me so I purchased a UV-10 today and have a pile of similar hardness stones waiting on its arrival. Can't wait to experiment and learn from my mistakes.
It seems like the board is very friendly and I am sure I will have tons of questions. Thanks for looking, Scott

A big Texas hello to you. As you probably know by now, rockhounding is addictive, and just when you think you've gotten the addiction under control-BAM-a pretty rock catches your eye and before you know it, you're packing a 5-gallon bucket of rocks home. Welcome.

Thanks for the welcomes!
Over the night I came up with my first question...I did a search and couldn't find a clear answer...
Am I supposed to wear a dust mask when I add grit and check on my rocks when they are tumbling? I see many components of grit are listed as toxic (aluminum oxide, etc.) and wondered if maybe I need to get some gloves, etc. The other thing I wonder about is getting the stuff on my clothes and having my kids around it. I know that anything can kill you but I don't want to make a mistake with my lungs or my kids' lungs because I didn't ask!
Thanks, Scott
