A lot of us are working with rocks from the quartz family: Because there are soooooooooo many different types of agates and jaspers, I was wondering if anybody knew of any good resources (book or web) that described the different varieties well. It would be nice to know which are considered "soft" like quartz which likes to stay cloudy (argh) and needs special care. Thanks!

"Holy Cats" I'd better reply then! I saw that link last time and just bookmarked it. It is VERY informative. I refer to it because it has the different hardnesses, and some good photos. Thanks James, It is a good resource. I usually go to it often just to browse and maybe get some of this information commited to memory since I need it so often. I appreciate your research James- Thanks!

Thank you for the site, I have bookmarked it as well. I found it very interesting. I bought some mysitcal topazes over the e-bay about a year ago. They are beautiful.

I am guilty of silence too since I just added it to my list of favorites but never told you thanks for the link. If a link is mentioned I always check it out and many times add it to my list of favorites. Thanks for the searching and sharing.

No problem guys. I just thought that nobody cared. I find the place to be very useful myself.

The link rocks! (pun intended) Thanks James!
Now here's the interesting thing...even with that link, it still doesn't hit every type of agate and jasper. That's a tough job.
Any other resources?

Yeah, they're very nice people too. I ordered some rough from them as well. 10 kg of Apricot agate and 8 kg of Ocean jasper. It's on sea freight right now. They said it would take 2-1/2 to 3 month to deliever. I can't wait though. The Apricot agate is basically a very deep orange/red carnelian. It should be worth the wait.

John, this is actually a very good question. All you need to do is convert the units of weight from metric, to U.S. standard.
A kilogram = 1000 grams
There are roughly 28 grams in an ounce
16 ounces in a pound
Operation:
1000 divided by 28 = 35.71 ounces
35.71 ounces divided by 16 ounces = 2.23 pounds
The answer is: Approimately 2.23 pounds = 1 kilogram
