I had a family reunion in Oregon this weekend. Lots of fun with family and friends, we took an extra day and went to the coast and went and played on the beach, then on the way home we stopped and picked up a load of Biggs from an old friend of mine. About 150 miles from home we started getting a real funny noise and before we could get off the side of the road one of my fancy aluminum rims just came apart and and exploded which just dropped the axle right on the freeway, by the time Chris got it off to the side we were missing half of the brake rotor and still had the tail end not quite out of the fast lane. Locked it in 4 low to try and drag it off the road but no doing, just dug a hole. So we had to call a tow truck and keep flagging oncoming traffic to keep them from hitting the pickup. We only found one piece if the rim, have no idea where the rest of it went. Had to ride the rest of the way home on the back of a tow truck. Here is the damage sitting in my driveway. The new load of Biggs Got all the new parts on today and getting rid of the aluminum rims tomorrow and going back to steel rims. Don't think the aluminum ones can handle the weight. One of those exciting trips we can talk about for years to come! Hope this is the last time I post something like this! Tony

Oh my goodness... luckily you had all your wits wit you and managed the situation til the tow truck came. Glad the tire and rim (and brake assembly) were the only casualties.
Just add it to the pile with all the other stories. Jo

The steel rims are probably the way to go, knowing the weight your truck has to haul around lol. Glad to hear you are both safe and sound. Nice load of Biggs by the way...

Well gull danged Tony. You gots to admit you have that truck loaded up pretty good *L* What do you figure that load weighed anyway? I know I had to put special springs shocks etc on my old Ford truck to move my rocks back here to Texas and I were still about dragging bottom....Mel

Tony: Good the hear you both are OK, but that was a some pucker factor for sure. My spare set of stock steel wheels just got a new lease on life. BTW, looks like some nice sized material in this load of Biggs.

Wow, that load of Biggs is wonderful! Sorry about the truck but now you know you can haul more and from all your posts I know you do this on a regular bases. Now if we all buy some of that Biggs the truck will be paid for. Great story to share knowing that no one was injured in this mishap!

Folks, not to preach, but my husband works for an industrial scale company -- one of their functions is maintaining/calibrating truck scales that you see at the state borders -- and he cautions VERY STRONGLY that it is easy to overload a truck with stone. You should be aware of the weight capacity of your vehicle at all times and don't forget that the weight of all individuals in the truck must be added to the weight of whatever you're hauling. This story could have had a very tragic ending, so I'm much relieved that Tony and all concerned are home safe. If in doubt, and you don't know the weight of what you're hauling, if it's stone or steel, assume it's too heavy and leave something behind.
We used to haul rough rock to gem shows in a Ford F100 pick-up from I think 1972 but we left a lot of "air space," if you know what I mean, to keep total weight with us, Amazon parrot, rock tables, and rough rock boxes under 1,000 pounds (I think that was our rated capacity but my memory is fuzzy). Sometimes we even had camping equipment in there for under the rated weight. No reason you have to haul everything all in one day, right?

Yeah, my cara van, many times, we probably have had over 1,000 in the back of it (packed with camping equipment), and 4 people. LOL. Kinda sketch!
oh yeah, Most Importantly.... THANK GOD, you didn't lose any rock! xD ..... Don't kill me, I'm joking!
Saturday we are going up to Sac to get free rock at the socitey in my dads Nissan Titan 1/2ton, (and Posibly a free 14" saw!!! xD). And I will keep this thread In mind...

Got the pickup all back together yesterday. My stock rims are aluminum also, but they are quite a bit thicker than the ones that came apart. Might have to search around for a set of steel rims. I did some checking on load ratings on rims and the steel rims and the aluminum rims have approx the same load ratings of 3100 to 3400 lbs each so the difference in the two would be how they react when damaged.
We had about 2500 lbs of Biggs and probably 1500 lbs of camping gear and people, but we have been bouncing around out in the desert quite a bit this summer so the rim may have gotten damaged some how. I do have overloads and air bags on the rear, which helps considerably.
The tow truck driver took some of my cards, he says he knows people in his hometown who have piles of rock in their back yard and he will see if they want to sell them.
My 2 yr old grandaughter, Lizee is still talking about the broken truck and the ride back on the tow truck, she has to go look outside every morning to see if the truck is still broken or not.
Thanks for all the well wishes. Have a great day..............Tony

Glad it came out well. We used to overload the ole truck till it was sitting on the axles. Just can't go much faster than a trot. And when it did break it just kinda fell over. lol What we do for rocks.... Now get to cutting. Thats a lot of rock.... Have fun... Jim

Gee Wiz! Glad you are all ok. How did Chris handle the nerves with this after the whole Subaru thing? (If memory serves, it was a Subaru right?) ~Krystee LOL Chris was driving, she had just started driving about 10 miles before it happened. I told her she was not allowed to drive my pickup again because she does bad things to it. She did do a good job keeping it from rolling and also getting it to the side of the road without causing a 10 car pile up. Think I will keep her. Tony
