Seeing skystones post about " a little scrap sheet and wire" reminded me of a method I used to use when materials got short. (nice cross BTW)
There is a product called "stepped bezel" from Rio and IJS but it's high dollar. I made my own by making a bezel to fit the stone, then soldering a step of small gauge square wire inside the bezel at the back. No need for a sheet silver back.
You do lose a little depth for the cab but it makes a nice mount and you can see the back of the stone too. Just another way to squeak out another few pieces from the scrap pile.
