Seeing skystones post about " a little scrap sheet and wire" reminded me of a method I used to use when materials got short. (nice cross BTW) There is a product called "stepped bezel" from Rio and IJS but it's high dollar. I made my own by making a bezel to fit the stone, then soldering a step of small gauge square wire inside the bezel at the back. No need for a sheet silver back. You do lose a little depth for the cab but it makes a nice mount and you can see the back of the stone too. Just another way to squeak out another few pieces from the scrap pile.

Bezel, square wire and solder are high dollar also. It would be another way of doing the job, and not considering your time, I have to wonder how much you would really save. Rocpup
