Looking to go cheaper......I mean less expensive. I've already been using some copper and brass and wondering what you guys think about stainless and where you buy. Thanks, Dave

I have stainless steel round but its one tough wire and not easy to work with. I don't think that anyone makes it in square or half round yet or softer temper.
I use mine for things like clasp hooks and eyes only as it is very hard to bend

I buy wire from this place! theringlord.com/cart/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=121&cat=Stainless+Steel+Wire&websess=15856587921849 What are using it for? They have up to 10swg stainless (3.2mm). And down to 26ga (0.4mm). Better to buy in bulk! But still cheap! Their stainless is probably really shinny because its for armor and jewelry! They have other wire too, Copper, Aluminum, Titanium, Niobium, Brass, bronze..... all of it! ;D And for those who do wire wrap and jewelry; they have gold-fill, sterling, fine silver, & enameled copper! beads, tools, findings, etc. ~Colt

I tried that at first. It was impossible to work with it. I almost gave up on wire wrapping. It is a good thing I tried copper next or I would not be here now.

I was gonna try it too, when I first started...but....Shannon (weeshan) told me it is very hard to work with, and strongly advised me not to go there....so I didn't !

I have never wrapped with it but given the replies thus far I doubt I ever will us it. A less expensive alternative to the copper or brass is craft wire. Beadsmith sells square and 1/2 round craft wire in gold, silver, copper, and antique bronze colors. You just have to be more careful with it when using your tools since the copper core will show through if you nick it. It also can be a little softer than sterling, gold, and copper (doesn't come in different hardness's). I buy mine at a local bead store.

Stainless is way too stiff, I have used it a little in non-lapidary art metal projects and it was a huge pain.

if any of you even considers trying to work with stainless DON"T use your good wire wrapping tools on it! it requires the hardened cutters the are for cutting piano wire as it will ding up regular cutters and the pliers have to be heavy duty to take the force it needs to bend and shape it

I use my bent nose on my 18ga stainless sometimes. It's a strugle, but It gets it done. My chainmail friends use the score and brake method for stainless. Works well when you dont have cutters that can cut all the way through. And one of my chainmail friends thats a girl my age, called me a wimp the other day for not using stainless! LOL! oh my gosh...... silver is 42.08/oz ~Colt

I recycled some gold filled and silver bits back to Rio Grande and made a little over $700.00 on it. I spent it all on more gold and silver wire when the price was still reasonable. I am going to use it sparingly for special stones only and keep most of my wrapping in the brass, copper and plated/coated copper wire.
