Found this guy paying me a visit this morning. He's a full 4 feet off the ground on the stalk of a Tiger Lilly. Love seeing garter snakes around here. they eat lots of crickets, grass hoppers and baby field mice. Don

He is awesome Don. I'm with you - I wish a few of them would show up in my yard & take care of the unwanted critters here. Unfortunately, I think it's too hot for them where I live here in AZ.

My lawn tractor stops for snakes, frogs, baby birds and any other critters that eat mice and bugs, and runs down mice.

Cute little critter. At 4 feet in length, it's probably a "she" - the males would be a lot smaller, usually. Really like garter snakes. Wish there were some around here.

For those not in the know, those buzz tailed snakes will climb too, looking for a meal of bird or eggs. So if you're in rattle snake country, remember to check the tops of bushes around you too. A leg strike can usually be survived. But a neck, face or chest strike and you're in real trouble. Don

Plenty of garter snakes around here Mel. When I'm out mowing, I spend more time waiting for them to crawl out of the way, than I do mowing.

Jake: We have quite a few Garter snakes around here too but the ones we have are a more bulky species than that pictures. You're right about rattlers climbing too. I was out on the Mojave once and was taking a pee break and looked down to see a Mojave rattler hanging in a larger bush at about groin level right next to me. That kind of stopped the flow for a moment or two *L*. He was quite a colorful fellow too, actually quite brick red in color where all I'd seen before we in the brown to greenish range. I'd collected the Red Diamondbacks before down on the Colorado desert but this was my first time seeing a Mojave in that same color tone......Mel

That's a pretty one. We saw one at my sister's house here in Orlando the other day. Harlie tried to catch it but it was too quick.

I have seen a couple of them out near our pond in the past but I don't look for them. Even the smaller variety scare me. I think they eat our little frogs are at getting legs and coming on shore now.
