So I picked up a little Chalcedony at the Tehacahpi Gem and Mineral show I attended yesterday. I visited for a little while with John from JS GEMS. Gonna have to save up my pennies to get a 18" blade from him!! I cut a couple of cabs. I like this material because it has this cool optical effect when the light hits it right it looks like there are bubbles inside bending the light. This material looks lavendar to me but I saw some photos on the net that made me wonder. Here are two photographs each of the the two cabs. One to try and get the color and the other to try and capture the optical effect. What color do you all think it is?? cab one color ![](http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/christopherlesso/CABOCHONS%20FOR%202011/SmLavChalcedony.jpg) effect ![](http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/christopherlesso/CABOCHONS%20FOR%202011/SmLavChalcedony2.jpg) cab two color ![](http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/christopherlesso/CABOCHONS%20FOR%202011/LgLavChalcedony.jpg) effect ![](http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/christopherlesso/CABOCHONS%20FOR%202011/LgLavChalcedony2.jpg) I did the best I could to capture the optical effect. Thanks for looking Christopher

I like it! Not much help on color from me though. On my screen the first one looks more blue and the third more lavender *L*. I like the almost moonstone glow effect though.....Mel

You know Mel I didn't even look. The person is someone I have been on a few digs with and we were chit-chatin' and he said here try this stuff out. I might be able to make it out there tomorrow. If I do I will be sure to ask him.

First one looks blue, second looks lavender . the effect may be form botryoidal or mammilary habit that chalcedony has often

I agree with Mel, blue then lavender. Maybe if you took the pic on a neutral background...

Ted, I think you are right. Cool effect.
So I am going to go with Lavender. I know they look different in the photographs but in hand they both resemble the color in photo 3

Very cool. I agree with Mel, sort of looks like a agate moonstone but that lavender effect really catches the eye. Tim

Beautiful, blue and lavender cabs. I would have to label them as iridescent! Really beautiful cabs.

Beautiful cabs Chris, How is the stone to work with? Based upon the pictures that you are showing the 1st one, to me, looks to be a blueish gray were the other one looks to be lavender. Perhaps you can shoot some pics with a white background. Also what is your light source as different light temps (Kelvin) will definately effect the color. Natural daylight is around 5100-5500k.

So this material is a hard 7 polishes up very nicely. There are some inclusions to work around and creases due to the bytroidal formation but the effort is well worth it. The color saturation is fairly even throughout the material. Due to different lighting conditions the stones appear to be different colors but they are not and are truly tihe same color. Here is a photo in the daylight...kind of shows off the chatoyancy in the material this better illustrates that they are the same shade but doesn't give a representation of the intensity of color ![](http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/christopherlesso/CABOCHONS%20FOR%202011/Glow.jpg)

Another thing i notice about chalcedony , is the color washes out with the more light that enters it , a larger cab will have a more intense color than a smaller - this form my experience with the material i`ve had . there may be some that does`nt wash out as much .

Hmmm, I would have to go with shades of gray since you have blues and purple hints in there. Love the patterns that you can see in the stones! Fran
