I just took a little ride on the scooter this weekend. I left home thursday morning, and went to South Dakota. This was mostly a motorcycling trip, but pickin' rocks was in the back of my mind.
The roads in South Dakota are a treat to ride! The badlands, the black hills... Wow, I had a great weekend.
The most fun of the whole weekend though was meeting Roger! What an awesome guy. He invited me to his rock shop sunday afternoon and we had a nice time chatting about rocks and seeing his fabulous Fairburn and Teepee Canyon agate collection (he's got one the size of a cantalope! ).
Roger even sent me home with a few amazing pieces. I was almost speechless. Thank you so much Roger!
Here's some pix of the 3 slabs and one nodule he gave me. I can see some amazing cabs from these slabs!
slab1, both sides wet
slab 2 both sides wet
this awesome piece with the amethyst in it is 1/2" thick. My wife may claim this piece as she loves amethyst, and likes using pieces like this for coasters
both sides wet
Teepee Canyon Agate nodule (whole it would be about baseball size). I'll probably face polish this amazing piece!
I even stopped in a few spots & picked some rocks. I found a few cool pieces.
These I found on the Missouri River by Chamberlain SD.
East side of river. The bottom right is a dead ringer for a montana. Other misc chalcedony and jaspers
West side of river. The top right is I think a hunk of prarie agate, I can see some banding in it. The bottom right is mossy. The top left is a mystery, but I'm pretty sure it's an agate.
I found these by a look out near Alva WY after riding past Devil's Tower. The round one is prolly just a hunk of limestone, but what the heck, I'll grind on it & see
I also stopped at Scott's Rock Shop in Custer City and bought 2 pieces.
This is I believe stone Canyon Jasper
And this I think is a local SD agate. Should make some sweet cabs too! (I can't believe I got that much glare outside today as it was cloudy.
I had an amazing trip. I rode 2274 miles in 5 days. I met Roger - and awesome guy, and was gifted some amazing material.
I can't wait to go back!
Thanks for looking,
Nate
