Hello,
I'm new at this and I was wondering what size wire is needed and what tools are needed to get started learning to wrap stone jewelry? I know that it is going to take a long time to get a technique down, but I need to know where I should start.

Welcome to the forum and I agree with Stu, Randy's tutorial answers a lot of questions and gives good advice. Also check out the tutorial on the wire wrapping section about swirls don't by Marie (Superioragates). I use 22 gauge dead soft square wire and 21 gauge dead soft 1/2 round wire for my wraps. A lot of it is personal preference.
As far as tools, the middle of the line jewelry pliers are good because they aren't as expensive but also aren't so cheaply made they break too easily. I generally use chain nose, round nose, wire cutters, and flat nosed pliers for wrapping. There are lots of other pliers some specialized but I started with the basics and still use them today. Don't like to pay lots of money for special pliers I'd only use once in a while.

Diane- not sure if I mentioned before, but I used to do my bindings with dead soft half-round, but later found that (after advise from Jeremy) the half hard half-round does cleaner bindings. It worked for me anyhow but you're right, it's personal preference.  |
