We are on our first ever rockhounding trip in the Ochoco's, staging out of Prineville. We did the White Fir Springs Jasper Thunderegg dig today and will do the agate bed tomorrow. Was considering the Maury Mountain Moss Agate dig but I wanted to know what the conditions are like. The guide given out by Elkins Rock and Gem states that it is hard rock digging and pick, prybar action. Is this a "bed" dig like the agate area or seams in a rock face? What am I getting into if I go there? Do you have to dig first to expose rock then hammer and chisel it out? Any input would be appreciated, thanks!

Would you suggest the Lucky Strike mine over Richardson's? How about the Macdonald Ranch in Ashwood? Hampton Butte isn't on the list we were given, is it near Prineville? Thanks!

Picked my maps up from Elkins when I was in town for business a couple of months ago. Will have to check out the BLM and Chamber maps in the morning. I think Maury Mountain is a possibility, going to probably give Hampton Butte a miss as it looks to be a couple hours one way from Prineville, the kids are a bit much when cooped up in the car that long. Also don't want to be that far from home base. Will save it and Glass Butte for another trip, maybe in the spring Thanks again for all the help!

You were real close to Lucky Strike when you were at White Fir. This time of year it may not be open as often as summer should still be open on weekends. It is worth a visit. If is is Richardson's or Lucky Strike go to Richardson's. Many different beds to dig and lots of rock to purchase. There is also the Paulina and Camp Ck limb cast areas about 1 hour from Prineville. We ended up pulling so much material out of White Fir we have no room for anything else substantial. Cutting our trip short and going to swing by Richardson's to buy some rough. All for the best, my oldest smashed a finger today on the way out and he won't be up for doing much other than complaining in any case Think we will try to hit up the Maury Mountain, limb cast area and maybe Hampton Butte on a 3-4 day trip up here sometime in October. After that the next trip won't happen until Spring I imagine. Thanks for the input folks!
