oolite is often a generic name . i think fossil origin of the oo`s . mudstone will polish quite well, you mention soaks up water , so i still say mudstone as before . where did you get this, it looks familiar.

I bought it on ebay about 8 years ago it had a tag but when I cut it up the tag went missing so now I have to guess at what it was. So mudstone with fossils - needs a better name

It reminds me of some of the fossil coral - jcinpc sells. Just doesn't have the defined pollups.

I'm going with fossil coral from Florida. That's my best guess without having it in hand :-)

That piece of coral is much different than the material Jeff collects. His material is solid chunks of agate with complete replaced pollups. Once in awhile you get the exposed pollups such as your piece.
