Thanks...We had a blast...We stayed for most of the time at Coyote Hills B&B near Hill City in the Black Hills. the last two nights at the Hotels Alex Jonson in Rapid City. There are many things to do in the area. Custer State Park was a big surprise; very similar to a national Park. Lots of wildlife and scenic roads(iron Mtn Rd and the Needles Highway). Sylvan Lake is so beautiful and even if you don't fish or boat, just hiking around it is a nice experience. Mt Harney is the big climb, a little challenging but not outrageously difficult. I loved the badlands, but the kids might not appreciate it as much. Besides the Badlands formations there are rock hounding grounds nearby the park and nearby is the Hokie Wall drugstore with something for everyone. Interesting going through some of the small towns near the badlands. Walk around Rapid City and see who can name the presidents,; I really liked Mt Rushmore and it is done tastefully; the rangers are very helpful as you might expect if you've ever dealt with National Parks and Federal workers before. I don't know where a week went.I had other things planned that I never got to do.
I saved some things for the next trip there; There are caves everywhere in the Black Hills some are Government run(Crystal and Jewel) and some private(Rushmore, wind, wonderland), but they seem spectacular, next time for sure. We never got to see Crazy Horse Memorial or the lighting ceremony at Mt Rushmore. We didn't get to see the cold war missile silos, the Mammoth site and the Hot Springs and Devils Tower in nearby Wyoming.
The Black Hills are a lovely area.

Great pictures Charlie! These are areas I have yet to visit but are high on the list. Did you get to do any rock hounding out there?

What a great trip, Charlie! While on business I spent a few days in SD but we were so busy, we didn't have time to do any sight-seeing. Looks like you had a great time! Paul

All the tourist sights are neat and as you say Mt. Rushmore is very well done but I noticed that you did not mention one rock shop. Hill City has at least two rock shops, there are two or three in Custer, and about three in Keystone, the home of the Famous Rock Shed. The last time we were there we spent 1 1/2 days going to rock shops alone. How could you go to the Black Hills and not go to one rock shop? :nono: :nono:

Cool pictures! I went to Mt Rushmore many years ago. They were doing restoration work and several men were standing on Lincoln's bottom eye lid. Really gave a sense of proportion. Those are some really big carvings.

Great pics!! The burros are one of my favorites. I drove through there on Saturday and I saw a little guy and his momma...he was pretty new. Soo cute!!! I love this area and am so thankful to call it home. If anyone ever makes a trip out here and needs any ideas let me know.

Shawn is the only one I know of that stays open during the off season.

The donkeys are wonderful. They eat anything. My Dad took the family there in 1961. They were crazy then and they were crazy when I went in June 0f 94 !!

A few years ago when my boys were young we went up there to visit kin folk in Lead and had a great time except it was during Sturgis week, what an experience that was. The boys really enjoyed panning for gold at this one place. The got two flakes of gold and about two dozen garnets they they still enjoy looking at. We took the tour of the gold mine in Lead and got some of the core drill samples. I don't know if the mine is still in operation or not. Seems that gambling is the big industry in the Black Hills now.
