Man cannot live on food alone. He must also have coffee, cigarettes and toys. Lots of toys.

Cleaned it out tonight (wasn’t bad) and played with all the settings. Got some improvement on colors but still not satisfactory. It’s only a cheap 0.3mp image sensor, hopefully you’ll do better with the newer 1.3mp model.

My first pic will be at the request of a guy on another wiki. He's been wanting to see a pic of a gold California fractional coin that I have. I'll take a pic with my camera first, along side of a quarter for size comparison, and a second pic through the digital microscope. After tthat I'll start playing with micro minerals. Don

Old camera vs pocket microscope. First pics are from my 10-year-old Olympus, 2 megapixels. ;D A couple of Bear Creek’s little beauties – red rutilated smoky quartz, golden rutilated quartz, and a flowering plume agate. Here’s the cabs. The biggie in the middle is 20mm x 12mm. ![](http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a390/parfive/BCcabs_01.jpg) This is about as close as I can get. ![](http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a390/parfive/BCcabs_02.jpg) Cropping the pic gets closer. ![](http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a390/parfive/BCcabs_03.jpg) I can crop closer, but can’t maintain 800 x 600. ![](http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a390/parfive/BCcabs_04.jpg) And some shots from the pocket microscope, all at 26x. Golden rutile. ![](http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a390/parfive/MicroGoldenRutile_1.jpg) ![](http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a390/parfive/MicroGoldenRutile_2.jpg) Red rutile. ![](http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a390/parfive/MicroRedRutile_1.jpg) ![](http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a390/parfive/MicroRedRutile_2.jpg) Back of the penny. ![](http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a390/parfive/Micropenny.jpg) Postage stamp. ![](http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a390/parfive/MicroStamp_1.jpg) Surprise. Can’t even see this with my reading glasses. ![](http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a390/parfive/MicroStamp_2.jpg)

Jake – On the microminerals, I think your biggest problem will be depth of field. I can see it in those rutilated cab pics (and on coins too). You’re trying to focus, but the needles are at slightly different depths. So some come into focus and some go out.
That’s why these guys with the fancy setups take multiple pics at different focal lengths and combine them all with software to get the whole specimen sharp.

I've read somewhere that the # 740 has manual zoom, instead of digital. This may make getting good focus easier.
My toy should be in Nebraska by now, headed north.

They’re the same, Jake. The ribbed section on the lower half is the manual zoomer. The top section is the focusing ring. Then say cheese and push the button on top. ;D ![](http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a390/parfive/Rockscope.jpg) I mentioned the larger image sensor in your model. Hopefully, this Amazon review isn’t definitive: “Carson's inclusion of a 1.3 megapixel image sensor and full-motion video capture come across as cynical at best: The lens can't resolve past the VGA capabilities of the previous MM-640, making the SXGA resolution of the imager pointless.”

That looks like a mistake on the camping website, Jake, listing the 640 microscope spec for the 740. MM-640 (mine) the microscope is rated 26-130x w/~0.3mp sensor. The lens is actually a 5x optical zoom (operated manually) . . . 5 x 26 = 130. MM-740 (yours, I think) the microscope is rated 34-168x w/1.3mp sensor. Also ~5x optical zoom (operated manually) . . . 5 x 34 = 170. It can get confusing – optical zoom, digital camera, digital zoom. Optical zoom is what you actually get from the lenses. Digital zoom is just blowing up the image more in software. You see that crap a lot in camera ads such as "5x optical zoom, 10x digital zoom". Only the 5x matters. www.kodak.com/ek/US/en/Tips_Projects_Center/Learn/Camera_Basics/Digital_camera_controls/Optical_amp_digital_zoom.htm

Well, I guess I'll soon find out. My new toy was on a truck at 5:30 this morning for delivery to the local Wally World. If they're on the ball, I should be able to pick it up tomorrow.

Here's a not so good pic of my gold coins. The one at the bottom is an 1871 California fractional $.50 piece. ![](http://i907.photobucket.com/albums/ac274/jakesrocks/101E0313.jpg) This is the one I'm going to try getting a couple pic of with the new toy.

Got a lot of mad little old ladies. Software isn't working right. I'm gonna have to call tech support, and hope I get someone who speaks English.

Can you describe it in a nutshell? Anything to do with a built-in camera on the computer? ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

It seems to be a Windows 7 issue. Think I found the problem. I just uninstalled the program, and will re install it shortly. Seems that on a Windows 7 putter, you have to install the program, then reboot the putter to get it working. My putter does have a built in camera. Scared hell out of me when I saw me looking back at me.
