Hey Jim, I guess I am a Little bit late for the party I must have missed this thread. Anyway welcome to the boards and you do great carvings. I am relatively new myself and everyone here is wonderful. You will fit in just fine. So what tool do you use to carve with? I would love to give it a try. Stu

Hi Stu When I was carving the solar flare I used just about every tool in the hardware store. Mostly round and curved files of every size. Then I went to sandpaper glued to popsicle sticks to get a polish. It would have been much easier if I would have had a dremel. The mushrooms that I carved when I was in China were mostly carved with long skinny pieces of steel sharpened on the end like a chisel. A guy that I befriended there ordered them for me. They use the dremel almost exclusively now but I am not steady enough to do it that way. The tools would be pretty easy to make if you had access to a metal shop. If I can find mine I will post a pic. If you would like to give it a shot I have some small pieces of alabaster and I will send a couple to you. You can send shipping info to wampidy@yahoo.com. Some of the hardware stores have little sets of chisels that they sell for a dollar or two and you can grind them down to the width that you want. The stone is quite easy to work with. I have no drawing ability but I have a pretty good eye for shapes and mushrooms are an easy shape for me. I gave away a lot of mushroom carvings to my Chinese friends. They carve a design on the bottom of them and use them for stamps like our signature. very interesting and absolutely impossible to copy. Thanks for the compliments. Jim
