** UPDATE ** I got the stand finished. I posted it on page 2.I purchased one of the obsidian knapped blades slabcabber was selling. My plan is to finish the knife and make a nice display stand for it. It will then be gifted to my father-in-law for his birthday. I have been hunting with Glenn for many years, we started hunting together even before I married Jennifer. He has been my mentor and friend more than my "in-law". I have to thank my friend Kevin for the shed antler. I think the knife turned out quite well. Hopefully the stand turns out as nice. Mexican Velvet Obsidian and Whitetail Antler Thanks for looking, Nate

Beautiful knife. That antler offers a lot of grip as a handle.

That turned out AWESOME Nate! Your father-in-law will be so pleased. I plan on doing a couple for relatives as gifts also. It seems so much more special when its something you have crafted yourself. Now I know I have to do some bone and horn handles!!

Thanks everybody. Mark sure did do a fantastic job on the blade. I didn't capture the cool colors in the obsidian when I photo'd it because the sun was almost down, but it's amazing!

Now, we just have to get you knapping so you can do the whole knife. This one came out very nice, and will be a valued present. Woody

Thanks Krystee and Woody. You know, I would love to try knapping someday. My father-in-law has mentioned he'd like to try it too. He's got the space for us to make a mess too. Sooner or later we'll give it a try.

That's really nice. How large is the antler base? I ask because the day you posted this I found two (not matched) white tail antlers on my Texas lot. They are pretty tiny though so I don't think they would work for knives. The only knapping I do doesn't include the "k". .

Looks awesome. Do you hold near the blade or between the tines?

Thanks guys. John, the antler is about 1 1/4" wide. It's almost too small, as the blade just sticks through both sides of the handle. I originally tried wrapping it with leather, but it kept breaking. I think the edge of the blade may have been cutting it. Todd, this is more of a display piece, although I think it would be an effective tool if needed. The antler fits in your hand, with the 1st tine going between your fingers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I got the stand finished today. I tossed around ideas for this part for several days, wondering if I should use a wooden placque or something more rustic. I finally decided to see what I could find to go rustic. I went to my town's local recycling area, affectionaltey known in my house as "the dump" and picked out this piece of wood someone trimmed and threw out. It is dry, so I don't need to worry about sap running out. I flattened out the bottom to sit level and not rock, then used a woodpecker hole for the antler (slightly modifying it with my drill), then cut a groove for the blade. Simple and effective, just the way I like it. Here's the finished product: Happy 65th Birthday Glenn! Nate
