Hi I have a quick question. For gem quality AAAgrade Labradorite what would the price per pound be? Thanks

Beautiful stuff, yet personally I prefer the seemingly stronger colors of Spectrolite. Which one is easier to work with? A lot of people call their stuff Spectrolite but I have been told that true spectrolite comes from Finland and not Madagascar

The labradolite I posted ad sent to some came form Madagascar. The cabinet top man That gave it to me quoted that 2inch thick slab cost him $99 per 6 inch square. Can you imagine the cost to his finnal client ? They bought 5 ea counter tops about 12 ft long by 4 ft wide. Those are some nice samples you have there.

Wow. Now for my question, are you sure that they are the same, I have worked quite a bit with Labradorite but never with Spectrolite and I have never seen colors like those in your piece. I thought that Labradorite had either a Blue/Green color combo or a Purple/Yellow color combo. I have seen orange just once. I did get a large amount from someone who got a lot more then he bargained for so I got it really reasonable.

Hi guys, I don't know but some how my thread got turned into a comparison between Labradolite and spectrolite. If that is what you want to talk about please start a new thread or at least respond to the question I posted in this thread. Stu

When I was in Newfoundland this summer, I managed to buy two pieces that were collected in Nain some time ago. This is the choice dark peacock blue stuff. The market is highly controlled, requires special collecting permits, and is about 2 to 3 days by boat north of the last highway. Needless to say, it is pricey. I paid $30 for two samll peices, probably enogh to make 4 medium sized cabs. Sounds expensive, but I considered myself lucky to find someone willing to sell.
Darryl.

Stu, that's good looking material, great color and coverage. The second piece is particularly fine. I'd consider it high grade cutting rough.

I paid $45.00 years ago for a small piece that produced these two cabs the more colors you have the higher its priced reds and golds seem to command the highest price

Depends on the piece. I'd want to hold it in my hand and look it over in real life though first, make sure the rough was shaped so I can slice parallel to the color, and find the stuff with the least amount of fractures. I would pay more for the 2nd pic, less for the 3rd, and 4th.
Some things to consider: I've seen lab go for as low as $2.50 - 3/lb at Quartsite last year, and many vendors had it available so there seems to be plenty material on the market.
From online vendors, "select" grade at the gem shop sells for 8/lb, "cabbing" grade sells for $12. compare to Madagascar minerals, their select grade is 5-9/lb and cabbing grade for $22/lb, so the price ranges across the board depending on what the market will bear. I would expect to pay a premium for the piece in the 2nd pic due to the red orange and purple color, and the large crystal face that appears to be pretty clean.
10-20/lb for the second piece and 5-9/lb for the others strikes me as reasonable...If I were at Quartsite, I'd negotiate for a better price.
You should take this all with a grain of salt though, I am by no means an expert on this material.

Thanks Don and everyone else fpr your feedback. When I get the material I will post to the forum with my own pictures. I was told that I will be getting pieces with four colors in them and pieces that are also gem clear as well. He says the material also goes by the name Malagasy Spectrolite. I might be able to get some extra if anyone is interested. Stu

I've never heard of malagasy spectrolite. I wonder if it's madagascar spectrolite? It's nice material, I hope you get a good price for it.
