i have a lot going on right now...but thought i would post how i screwed this up...as far as saving grit.
load went in 60/90...7/3...went to check..7/17....not paying attention...i went outside...dumped the rock in the colander...and went to washing....not even thinking about saving the slurry...which i should have done.
after realizing what i had done...i thought to myself....self....stickem in 500 for 2 weeks....and then into borax...which is now the plan....what i end up with who knows...will post pics in a few weeks.
peices were precut on the workforce...and some filler such as amy.
so far 60/90 14 days...500 will go for 14 days...then straight to borax for 7 days...we will see. ;D

;D? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ?? What is the screw up? Not saving the slurry? I thought only polish was worth saving? Been basic polishing on, and off for years. Would love to get info onthe best polishing methods.

Are you suppose to save the slurry? I have been dumping it in an old planter. lol

This was part of an experiment cpdad was attempting with running a load in 60/90 a long time and then throwing it into borax for a "long" time.
Just an experiment.

Well...I save my stuff in each batch! My slurry for coarse is very thick. Each time I put a new load in, I just recharge the grit & keep on going. So far it works out great AND I'm not going thru grit anywhere near as fast as before.

For a good tumble in coarse, I've found if it gets too thick you get no tumbling action and it takes forever to shape. I do save some of my slurry to use in the next batch but not all of it unless it's very watery. Most of the time though it's about the consistency of heavy cream or almost runny pancake batter.

zardoz..and goofie1....as arkansan said..its just an experiment...dont put a lot into my posts..hahahahahaha. first of all...there was no true rough in this load...it was either precut on the workforce saw...or had been thru 60/90 for 7 days...in other batches. my screw up was that i discarded my slurry when i shouldnt have...at least for this little experiment. i wanted to run the precut peices in 60/90 for 30 days...hoping to see results from the grit breaking down over time...and then straight into borax...for another long amount of time...just to see what would have happened. but since i washed away my slurry...that experiment dont fly anymore...its now. 60/90..14 days. 500..14 days. borax... ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ...first check at 7 days.

Hey can I get in on the pancakes? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) cpdad- I admire your willingness to experiment- I don't think you are gonna see what you want from the 500 after only 14 days- I routinly run 120/220 for 14 days and have done the 500 for 14 days- There is no way the stuff is ready to go to borax after 14 days- I think I would change your plan to run the 500 for 30 days then try the borax (jmho)

stefan i agree..im scrapping this experiment....first of all i dumped my slurry...not thinking...and there is also 1 peice that i need to move on to polish.
hopefully it may be wrapping material...so i need to move them on any way.
i do beleive these peices are going to be super nice...its just something about the agate that we get here...that seems to take a super shine...but yet doesnt take forever...or should i say chert...which it is technically....is that a word?..technically.
in any case...i will post the final recipe...and pic results.
i sure hope the 1 peice i wanted...turns out well...if it does..im sure there will be pics of it posted...wrapped.
