Well, I've been thinking it is high time I offered up a contest, especially given my recent success(es) in the contest department. I have been having a tough time coming up with an idea, until I was going through the stashes of rocks I inherited from my Mom. I came across a jar of garnet gravel, I separated them out and counted them 4 times for accuracy. They are tiny little buggers not good for much besides fond memories.
So here is the contest: (Continental U.S. only, please) You have to guess how many garnets there are. You can make as many guesses as you want, but only your latest guess will count. I may provide a clue or two, if no one is coming near the count. The contest will run until either someone nails the exact count, or the closest guess by Saturday Nov. 26th at 10:00 pm Eastern time, which ever comes first. In the event of a tie for the closest guess, the 1st person who guessed wins. (For instance, if two guesses are 5 off the actual count, the first one that guessed wins) The prize is 12 lbs. of mixed tumbling rough. I am posting pics, so you can decide if you wish to win/play.
Here are the garnets. In a pile, and in a spice bottle. (Remember, looks can be deceiving...)
Here is the tumbling rough, pictured wet. It is a mix of jasper/chert, pet wood, agates and quartz. First pic taken outside, cloudy day.
