Hey folks! Love the board! Been rock hounding for years but just started tumbling with a homemade tumbler. Got a DC servo motor from my gals collection of 27 sewing machines and off I went. Doing the bucket and spool method now but in the process of building some new barrels. I'm an electrician and firefighter by trade. I play some music. Played alot in my younger days when I was in the big city (MPLS). I now live in small town Ely MN and we're just sliding into winter. READ -20F average in the full grip of it. Pretty nice now though. Anywho, love this board and I'm a total rock freak. Collect alot of Jasper and BIFs. Experimenting on tumbling larger than usual rocks. Take care and happy turkey day!

Welcome aboard morsefire. I have rockhound friends living in Denver who will be moving to Ely in the next year or so.

Welcome! I'm in Mpls, and I know Ely and have even skied up the Gunflint, so I know cold too. I always say it helps to keep the rip raf away. Just like the Wisconsin Dells helps to keep people from Chicago from getting any closer during the summer.
Can Ely Greenstone be cut or tumbled? I've seen pictures of cut surfaces showing beautiful green patterns, but I've never seen it used in the lapidary arts.

hey there Morsefire!!! I'm Jakesrocks friend that is moving to ely, most hopefully this summer!! we have to put this house up for sale, and then with the proceeds, purchase a home there. Both of my parents were born and raised there, and we have a long important history with the town. If I can figure out how to do it, I'll send ya a private message. Moving to ely is the culmination of a life long dream AND a gift to my husband for being the bestest guy ever!! You don't happen to own the rock shop in town do you??? nan

Welcome aboard moresfire! I'm in Duluth between you and Daniel. Bob at Agate City in Two Harbors does a lot of jewelry work with Ely Greenstone.
